Smart Gilas Pilipinas ended its campaign for 2012 London Olympics in an upset against to a powerhouse team Jordan and moved at the 4th spot of the prestigious FIBA Asia Basketball Championship.
The upset is not a tease but an achievement that each and everyone of us must be proud of. Since 1987, when the Philippine team stepped in the final four in the whole Asian basketball. Almost 24 years, the basketball glory was dead. It is an honor and we must appreciated what our basketball team had done to renew our powerhouse existence in the court of basketball. Being the fourth of the hundreds of Asia is a great achievement for us, proving that yet we are small, we are one of its best giants and a great team to fear of.
From the sport that we’ve already loved to the sport that we are blind of, throughout the past decades, the sports that could fit in our Filipino athletes and the king of all sports—Football. It doesn’t requires height or physical appearance but it needs heart and determination on which our Filipino athletes had an edged. Philippine Azkals were the forces who strapped each blindfolds of every Filipino. It marked a legacy as they taught us to praise the king of all sports. The Azkals brought back the Philippine goal of football on its finest displaying an enormous upset of the powerhouse teams in Asian Football Challenge Cup and AFF Suzuki Cup. The Azkals marched their way as they garnered the support of the Filipinos in developing and renewing football in the Philippines. Its name “Azkals” also gathered the attention to our government, proving that we have the skills to put an edged and a legacy in the world of sports and it is also an evidence that the government were not supporting the football and the Filipino athletes in their journey of its goal.
Another Philippine teams that the government didn’t lay their support were the Philippine Rugby team known as the “Volcanoes” and the Philippine Dragon boat team. The government failed to handle the top glory of the Philippine sports in the past decades. In Southeast Asia, we only averaging as the 5th to 6th place as Vietnam and Thailand dominates the play. In World Olympics, we still haven’t got the prestigious gold medal garnering only 2 silvers and 9 bronzes since we started to enter the prestigious event.
The search for our first gold continues. The government were greedy to have it but are they really want to go for it? How can we get one? do we find faults to our athletes? Absolutely, we should not blame our athletes. They had it all but they lack training and support from the government and that’s the lacking piece on its search for gold.
Despite of the lapses of our government to find ways of supporting our Philippine sports, the athletes found their ways and determined to put a dramatic showdown in their International battles. As the Azkals, Volcanoes, Dragon boat team and other athletes successfully risen the banner of our country, the government awakened by the truth in the real status of our sports. The President himself together with other officials, different companies and organizations promised to provide support for our Philippine sports. It marked that this will be our stepping stone for a greater legacy to put supremacy in our glory for our 1st gold. That’s one of the reasons why we can’t get a gold but as we’ve marked this to an end. Hopefully, the government will truly support our RP sports and realized something that it is time to put an edge and a dramatic ending of its milestone. The athletes and the government must be as one team, one nation, one glory for one goal to renew our Philippine sports as we rise its glory for the 1st gold.
